The Promised Conclusion of Epic 9

When Gala announced the Epic 9 roadmap in March 2014, Rise of Power was presented as the final part — the update that would complete a trilogy designed to rebuild the relationship between developers and community. Several features that had been promised for this Epic did not make it in — notably the private guild bank messaging system — but the core content arrived and delivered meaningful additions across dungeons, gear systems and character progression.

What nobody knew at the time was that Epic 9 was not actually over. Three more updates — 9.4, 9.5 and 9.6 — would follow, none of them originally planned. Rise of Power turned out to be not a conclusion but a mid-point.

The Old Ruins Dungeon

The Old Ruins was the dungeon of Epic 9.3 — accessible from level 160, though clearly designed with level 170+ players in mind. With an architecturally impressive entrance and a roster of challenging monsters including a wandering Ogre and a Crystal Golem, the Old Ruins had a distinct atmosphere that set it apart from the underground dungeons of the 8.x era.

Access to the Old Ruins was unlocked through a level 170 quest chain — making it gated content rather than freely available, which kept it feeling exclusive and rewarding for players who put in the progression work to reach it. Notably, the Old Ruins entrance was also made accessible from level 160 in Epic 9.4, expanding its audience retroactively.

The Emblem System

Epic 9.3 introduced Emblems — a new system that added another layer to character customisation and progression. Emblems provided stat bonuses and effects distinct from standard gear and artifact systems, giving players a new axis of optimisation to explore and a fresh set of goals to work toward in the endgame.

7 New Talent Points and Quest Chains

Epic 9.3 added a total of 7 new Talent Points — split across two quest chains designed for different progression stages. At level 160, a quest chain required players to kill resurrected bosses: a harder Butkadah in Cubric and tougher bosses in the Circus dungeon at difficulty level 4. Completing this chain rewarded a Talent Point.

At level 170, a separate quest series unlocked access to the Old Ruins and awarded additional Talent Points on completion. Between the two chains, players had a clear and structured progression path through the Epic 9.3 content — something that earlier Epics had sometimes lacked.

The Booster System

Epic 9.3 introduced the Booster system — a new mechanic allowing players to equip items that granted additional skills. Boosters worked as a separate equipment layer, providing active or passive abilities that supplemented a character’s existing skill set. This gave build diversity a new dimension and allowed players to tailor their characters beyond the constraints of their base class and gear choices.

Why Epic 9.3 Still Matters

The Booster system opened up a new dimension of build customisation that players are still using today. Emblems added a progression layer that gave endgame veterans a fresh set of goals. The Old Ruins became one of the game’s most atmospheric dungeons. And 7 new Talent Points gave every player a tangible reason to engage with the new quest content.

Epic 9.3 closed what was supposed to be the final chapter of Rappelz’s official update history — but the story wasn’t finished yet. Three more Epics followed, taking the game all the way to 9.6 and beyond.
