Full Rappelz Epic Timeline  ›  Epic 9.4 — The Expedition

Released 27 September 2016, Rappelz Epic 9.4: The Expedition was never supposed to exist. Not on Gala’s roadmap, controversial in its numbering — some argued it should have been called Epic 10 — it arrived as a genuine surprise and brought an entirely new zone, 12 new weapons, 7 new bosses and a lore revelation that connected Rappelz to another Gala universe entirely.

The Epic Nobody Expected

After Epic 9.3 had been positioned as the end of the Epic 9 roadmap, Epic 9.4 arrived without warning. It was not on Gala’s published plans, and its naming was immediately controversial — given the scope of its content, many in the community argued it warranted its own Epic 10 designation. Gala kept the 9.x numbering, fuelling debate that has never entirely died down.

Whatever the numbering dispute, the content itself was substantial — a fully new zone, new weapons, new bosses, daily quests and a lore revelation that connected the Rappelz universe to Madrigal, the world of FlyFF.

The Island of the Fallen Gods

The new zone — the Island of the Fallen Gods — was accessible from level 150 but clearly designed for players at 170 and above. The zone was populated by seven new world bosses and creatures unlike anything previously seen in Rappelz — because, as the story revealed, they were not from the world of Rappelz at all.

Daily quests tied to the island gave players a regular reason to return and farm the new zone, integrating it into the daily progression loop rather than treating it as a one-time destination.

The FlyFF Connection — A Lore Revelation

The in-game story of Epic 9.4 explained the island’s strangeness directly: the explorers who discovered it found that none of its monsters were part of Gaia’s bestiary. The reason, revealed through the storyline, was that the island was part of Madrigal — the world of FlyFF, another Gala Lab MMORPG. The two universes were canonically linked.

This crossover lore detail was unexpected and divisive — some players found it a fascinating piece of world-building, others found it jarring. Either way, it made Epic 9.4 one of the most discussed updates in the game’s later history.

Why Epic 9.4 Still Matters

The Island of the Fallen Gods is still one of the primary farming destinations for level 170+ players on private servers today. Its new weapon tier and ring drops remain relevant to progression. And the lore connection to FlyFF — whatever your opinion of it — is a unique moment in Rappelz’s history that no other update can claim.

Epic 9.4 proved that Rappelz still had meaningful content to offer even after its “final” planned update had shipped. That continued investment from Gala kept the game alive long enough to reach Epic 9.6 — and the private server community that exists today.
