Released February 2023, Rappelz Epic 9.8 — officially titled the Labyrinth of Light update — was one of the most feature-dense patches of the game’s post-9.6 era. The character level ceiling climbed to 240, the Luciad Power system completely reworked how players upgraded gear past +20, Pure White Weapons introduced a new crafted tier, and the Labyrinth of Light brought a math-based puzzle dungeon unlike anything previously seen in Rappelz.
Rappelz Epic 9.8 — Luciad Power System Explained
The most far-reaching mechanical change in Rappelz Epic 9.8 was the introduction of Luciad Power — a ground-up replacement for how gear was strengthened beyond the +20 mark. Under the old system players could push equipment to +25; that numeric ladder above +20 was retired entirely and replaced with Luciad Power stacking. The transition was automatic: any gear already enchanted above +20 was converted on patch day, preserving all stats.
Raising Luciad Power requires three slots in the enhancement window: the piece of gear itself, a Luciad’s Power Stone (weapon or armor variant), and a Luciad’s Pure Cube. Pure Cubes cover power levels up to ×32 and drop from any boss at level 150 or higher, as well as appearing in Labyrinth of Light chests. Pushing past ×32 — up to the ×40 cap on Pure White Weapons — requires the Luciad’s Advanced Cube, which is only obtainable inside the Labyrinth.
Power Stones themselves are extracted from other +20 pieces using the Luciad Power Extractor, purchasable from any blacksmith NPC for 200,000,000 gold. The number of Extractors consumed equals the Luciad Power level of the donor item — extracting from a ×32 piece requires 32 Extractors. Rappelz Epic 9.8 — The Labyrinth of Light Dungeon Guide
The centrepiece of Rappelz Epic 9.8 is the Labyrinth of Light (also referred to as Brighten’s Maze) — a 16-room group dungeon that blends rapid monster clearing with a unique mathematical puzzle mechanic. Players must be at least level 200 and complete a chain of quests before they can enter. The quest chain begins with Luciad Community Messenger Ruth, located at the Dead City pier, starting with the task titled “A Forgotten Reason”. On entry, parties land on a small platform surrounded by darkness. Activating the entry device launches the run. The dungeon is divided into 16 arena rooms chained in sequence, each filled with Guardian-rank monsters of increasing level the further in you go. All 16 rooms must be completed within a strict 30-minute window.
How the Puzzle Mechanic Works
After wiping out all enemies in a room, each fallen Guardian of rank A, B, C and D drops a sphere containing a number. Add all four numbers together. On the far side of the room, four floor panel tablets await — each displaying a mathematical statement about your combined total:

Panel up = True. Panel down = False. Interact with the device once all four are set to advance.
Each correct answer skips the party forward one room; all four correct jumps them ahead by four rooms. Getting all four wrong sends the group back to room one. Speed matters: every minute remaining on the clock when the final chest is opened adds 1% to its drop rate — meaning a group that clears in 15 minutes picks up a 15% drop bonus.
In the first room, players can pick up the Quiz King quest from Templar Oui — completing it rewards an extra talent point. The chest in the final room is opened by one party member, but every participant receives their own reward.
Fibonacci Quick Reference
The Fibonacci sequence starts: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 … Each number is the sum of the two before it. If your combined total appears in this list, the Fibonacci statement is True.
Pure White Weapons — A New Crafted Weapon Tier
Rappelz Epic 9.8 introduced Pure White Weapons, a new crafted tier sitting above the Island of Forgotten Gods gear. Officially confirmed in the Epic 9.8 Steam announcement, crafting preserves all existing enchantments, soul gems and stats from the base weapon — nothing is lost in the process.

- Auxiliary slot: Matching unfinished Circus dungeon weapon (can be un-opened)
- Material slot: Pure Luciad’s Energy — 25 units for one-handed, 50 for two-handed
Pure Luciad’s Energy is obtained as a drop inside the Labyrinth of Light. Crafted weapons require level 210 to equip.
7-Line Awakenings, Enhanced Soul Stones and More
Weapon and accessory awakening expanded significantly in Epic 9.8 — both types can now carry up to seven awakening lines, up from five. To reach the new cap, players combine a standard Awakening Stone with Pure Luciad’s Energy to produce a Blessed Awakening Stone; the accessory equivalent uses a Blessed Awakening Stone: Accessory, created the same way.
If a player wants to change a single existing line without rerolling everything, Awakening Stones I through VII allow targeted replacement — apply the stone matching the line number you want to change. These single-line stones are available in the in-game store.
Enhanced Teardrops (Serene Soul Stones Grade 2) gained two new upgrade tiers via the Energy Master NPC. Reaching +5 requires Soul Stone Essence earned inside the Labyrinth of Light. Pushing to +10 requires Unstable Soul Stone Essence, purchasable from the cash shop. Place the gear containing the stone in the Soul Gem Management window, then slot the relevant essence into the bottom cell and click the stone you want to improve.
Talent Point Tree Expansion and Skill Updates
The job level cap rose to 120, opening new layers in the Talent Point tree. The first skill in each Talent Point branch gained a third study tier, unlockable at job level 116. Two additional enhancement tiers were added to each branch’s skill-boosting abilities, with the following profession levels required:
Multiple passive skills also became further upgradeable at profession levels above 115, giving long-term players a fresh set of goals to work toward.
Quality-of-Life and Balance Changes
Beyond the headline features, Epic 9.8 included a range of targeted improvements to inventory management, economy and combat balance:
Stackable item boxes were introduced for several high-demand drops that previously cluttered inventories. Items including Creature Skill Artifacts, Soul of Mortis, Ring of the Horadric, Blue Kainen Necklace, Red Kainen Earring, Janua Mirror and Janua Shield now fall as boxes that stack in a single inventory slot.
Item weight was significantly cut across a broad list of consumables: potions (Red and Blue, standard and improved, levels 2–10), Resurrection Scrolls, Creature Resurrection Books, Sweet Bread, Sweet Water, gladiator potions in both colours, and all food, crystal and arena potion boxes — plus keys. This makes carrying larger stacks far less punishing.
Skill Card Box bulk opening was capped at 5,000 per action — a massive time-saver for players sitting on large stockpiles. The Coin Exchange Assistant NPC handles bulk opening.
Crystal of Devildom can now be stored in the warehouse rather than taking up character inventory space.
Buff refresh scroll coverage was expanded — more active buffs now qualify for extension via both player and pet refresh scrolls.

Perfect Block was capped at 70% — a balance adjustment preventing certain builds from achieving near-total physical immunity.

Why Rappelz Epic 9.8 Matters
The Luciad Power system was the deepest gear mechanics overhaul the game had seen since the ethereal enchanting era of Epic 6.3. The conversion approach — automatically migrating existing +21–+25 gear without any stat loss — showed a maturity in how updates were being handled, reducing friction for established players while still offering a meaningful new progression path. Together with the level 240 cap, Pure White Weapons, expanded awakenings and a stack of quality-of-life improvements, Rappelz Epic 9.8 set a high bar that the subsequent updates — Epic 9.9 Twilight Underworld and Epic 9.10 King of Alcatraz — would go on to build from.
